Mason-Rice School Council PDF  | Print |  E-mail

The Mason-Rice School Council is an elected body comprised of five parents, four staff members, two community members who are otherwise unconnected to the school, and the principal.

The purpose of School Councils, according to Massachusetts education law,  is to assist and advise principals in areas including:

  1. Adopting educational goals for the schools;
  2. Identification of the educational needs of the students;
  3. Review of the annual school budget; and
  4. Formulation of a school improvement plan.  View 2009-2011 SIP Mason-Rice

The council offers a unique opportunity for parents, community representatives, teachers and the principal to engage in dialogue about a wide range of issues relevant to the educational goals of the school and the needs of the students.  Specific issues addressed by the School Council have included class size and grade configuration, diversity issues, homework policy, the core value program, space issues, bullying issues, among others.

The School Council meets 4 to 6 times during the school year to advise the Principal. The meeting dates and times can be found on the calendar posted on the Mason-Rice website and in the Mason-Rice Notes.  Meetings start times will alternate between 3:30pm or 6:30pm.  Duration is typically 1.5 hours.

  • Four faculty members: Mi-Mi Chen, Pek-Hu Liu, Katelyn Malin and Anne Scigliano.

Open Positions Annually
At the beginning of each school year, the PTO will announce OPEN positions for the current school year.  Open positions will be announced in the Mason-Rice Notes.  Any parent may submit a letter of interest for any open positions.  If there are more candidates than open positions, an election will be held in early October, and ballots will be sent home to every family.

If you have any questions, please conact any one of the PTO co-Presidents.  You can submit your letter of interest in writting (drop letter in PTO Mailbox in the school lobby) or via email to any PTO co-President directly or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
