Children enjoy seeing their parents participate in their school life, and benefit enormously from these contributions.  The Mason-Rice PTO is a great community of volunteers - help our children succeed - help our school succeed - and make lots of great friends and connections along the way.

You can volunteer in your child's classroom, at the request of a teacher or of a room parent; and/or you can volunteer at the school through one of the many volunteer opportunities presented by the PTO.  It's up to you to determine what you get involved in and your level of involvement.

To help you learn about volunteering opportunities at our school, check out the Program & Committees section of this website to learn about the various programs the PTO is involved in. And, please contact any of the PTO co-Presidents to talk about what works for you and your family.

Volunteer Opportunities. The following is a brief overview of volunteer opportunities that are available:

  • Classroom Help:  You can volunteer in your child's classroom.  For more information, click Classroom.

  • Room Parents:  You can be a Room Parent for your child's classroom.  For more information, click  Room Parents

  • Library Volunteers:  You can help out in the library.  For more information, click Library.

  • Fundraisers.  The PTO organizes several fundraisers throughout the school year, and most of them require lots of volunteers.  The major fundraisers includes our Dues/Donation Campaign, Book Fair, Kids Raffle and Fools' Folly Auction/Raffle.  Each year, the PTO Board will assess their budget and set fundraisers and goals.  Fro more information, review Fundraisers.  Your involvement in a fundraising program can be as great or as limited as you feel comfortable with, or as you have time for.  Examples of the kind of volunteers that are needed for fundraisers include: helping the food committee for the spring parent party; volunteering to be a cashier at the Book Fair, selling Mason-Rice T-shirts; volunteering at School Picture Day.

  • Arts and Sciences Enrichment Program.  One of the major areas that the PTO budget supports is funding arts and science programs for all grades. Read more about Enrichment Programs.  Examples of the kind of volunteers thar are needed for enrichment programs include:  becoming a part of the Creative Arts & Sciences Committee, which reviews many different Newton Puclic School approved programs to determine which best fit within the Mason-Rice curriculum and community; sharing your scientific expertise by volunteering during Science Discovery Week; assisting to collect and collate books for Book Swap; helping teachers organize a Crystal Lake Projects; or coordinate Musical Mornings program.

  • Community Events.  The PTO sponsors several community events and programs throughout the school year.  These events are intended to foster a sense of cohesiveness and community among our families.  For a description of community events, click Community.

  • And if you are looking for short duration (2-4 hrs or 1-2 days) opportunities, learn more about these School-Wide Programs to help Promote Safety, Health, Fitness and Respect for Our School and Our Community. These programs takes place during the school year, scheduled on the School Calendar, and require mostly event day support.  Programs include:   Bicycle Safety/Pedestrian Safety, Field Day, Green Team, Kinder-Club, Lost & Found, Safe Arrivals, Safe Routes to School, and School Garden.  See General Support to learn more.
