The PTO supports programs that ensure safety and promote the fitness and health of our students and our community. Contact any PTO Co-President if you are interested in helping out. These programs include:
Safe Arrivals / CALLBACK Program Coordinators and Volunteers, ensures the safe arrival of all children to school. One parent volunteer is present at the front of the school lobby each morning to write down the names of children entering into school after the last bell, collect attendance sheets from each classroom, and check the attendance against the tardies to make sure all children are accounted for. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Meg Storing.
If a child is going to be absent or late, parents are responsible for calling in to 617-559-9580 - CALLBACK # and 24-hour voicemail) to inform the school about your child's absence. For more information, click How Callback Works.
Musical Morning Coordinator Musical Mornings offer ALL Mason Rice students a chance to share their musical talents with their classmates and teachers. Before each Principal Star Assembly (held on various Tuesday mornings throughout the school year), 1 or 2 students entertain us with a short musical piece (instrumental or vocal). All levels of expertise are welcome. Coordinator will schedule 2 student performers for each Stars Assembly (K-2 and G3-5 from 8:40am - 9:15am) through out the school year. Each musical performance range from 1 to 3 minutes.
Lost & Found Coordinator The PTO manages bins of lost & found items, periodically displays the lost & found items for possible retrieval, and has a donation program for all unclaimed lost & found items. Please label your child's clothes, shoes, backpack so they don't get donated. Read Lost and Found Policy. Any questions? Contact Jamie Scarbourough.
Safe Routes to School Coordinators Mason-Rice is part of a citywide effort to significantly reduce traffic around our schools. 85% of children live within a mile of school. Do you know how far you live from school? Want to know more ways you can keep your kids safe and respect our school comunity and neighbors? Check out the information at Safe Routes to School. Contact Alicia Bowman if you are interested in helping out.
Bicycle Safety/Pedestrian Safety Coordinators and Volunteers Bicycle Safety is a program for 4th and 5th graders. A Bicycle Safety Day is planned for each grade during which they watch a movie on bicycle safety and the rules of riding in the streets; they are given a brief demonstration of bicycle care; and then go on a Newton Police Department guided bicycle ride through the streets of Newton.
Pedestrian Safety is a program for 2nd graders. A Pedestrian Safety Day is planned during which the children go out onto the sidewalks around the school and, with parent volunteers as guides, are taught how to safely cross streets ("Stop, Look & Listen").
Field Day Coordinators and Volunteers Field Day is a day, held in the beginning of June, coordinated together with the Physical Education teacher, of fun and games around the playground and fields of Mason-Rice, and culminates with an ice cream treat for the children and a performance by our very own Mason-Rice teacher/parent band, "Loose Change".
School Garden Coordinators Every year, dedicated parents and students volunteer to take care of our school garden, as well as welcoming, each spring, summer and fall, parent volunteers tend to the perennial garden in the front of the school. Contact Sunwoo Kaghn or Thom Theara. Mason-Rice also maintains a garden to support curriculum, lead by teacher Mike Costello.
